Where Owlboy runs in 2026
Owlboy is available on Steam for Windows, macOS and Linux, and on consoles. The Steam version is the one this site covers, because it is the version that received the 2026 anniversary update and the one with the current 90% discount.
This page covers what runs where, what the ports changed, and which version to choose in 2026.
Steam: Windows, macOS and Linux
The Steam store page lists all three desktop platforms. They are not separate builds any more: since the April 2022 patch, the game ships as one shared build for Windows, Mac and Linux, which is why the update notes mention a single build rather than three.
The 2022 patch is the most important technical change since launch:
| Change | Effect |
|---|---|
| Moved to FNA | Fixed multiple crashes and made the game work on Steam Deck |
| Single shared build | Windows, Mac and Linux use the same files |
| Faster level loading | Noticeably shorter loads between rooms |
| Better CJK fonts | Japanese, Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Korean are more readable |
| Native PS4 controller support | No wrapper needed |
| Help files in Data/Help | Local documentation in the install folder |
| Old XNA build on a branch | The xnaversion branch keeps the pre-2022 build |
The old XNA build matters for one group: speedrunners, who sometimes need it for timing mods. The Speed-runner Mode page explains the branch situation.
Steam Deck
The 2022 patch was explicitly aimed at Steam Deck compatibility, and the game runs on the Deck without special configuration. It is a 2D pixel game with modest requirements, so battery life is good and the fan stays quiet.
The anniversary update's auto-aim toggle makes the Deck's controls more comfortable, because you no longer need to use both sticks precisely. That is a real improvement for handheld play.
Consoles
Console versions exist for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. The official Owlboy site documents a retail partnership with SOEDESCO for PS4 and Switch, announced for 29 May, with a Limited Edition following on 13 July. The site does not give a year in that announcement; the retail run followed the console digital releases.
What the console versions do not have is the 2026 anniversary update. The update was announced and shipped for Steam. If the toggles, the Super Dash and the Speed-runner branch matter to you, the Steam version is the one to buy.
Which version should you buy
| You want | Buy |
|---|---|
| The anniversary update | Steam |
| The cheapest price | Steam, during the anniversary sale |
| Portable play with the update | Steam Deck |
| A physical copy | PS4 or Switch retail, second-hand |
| Achievements | Steam, or the console trophy list |
The game is not cross-buy and saves do not transfer between platforms. If you own it on console and want the update, you are buying it again on Steam.
Controller and input support
Steam lists full controller support, and the game recognises XInput pads and, since 2022, PS4 controllers natively. It reads only the pad assigned to player one, so unplug other controllers if a pad is not detected.
Keyboard and mouse are supported, and the anniversary update made keyboard-only play practical. The controls page has the full binding table.
What about mobile?
There is no official mobile version. Owlboy is a desktop and console game, and the store pages do not list iOS or Android.
What the Steam version includes
The store page lists a full feature set, and it is worth checking against the console versions if you are choosing:
| Feature | Steam |
|---|---|
| Single-player | Yes |
| Achievements | 12 |
| Full controller support | Yes |
| Trading cards | Yes |
| Cloud saves | Yes |
| Leaderboards | Yes |
| Remote Play on TV | Yes |
| Family Sharing | Yes |
Cloud saves matter more than usual for this game because the anniversary update added a separate Speed-runner branch. If you switch branches, Steam Cloud can sync a save between builds; back up the save folder first. The Speed-runner Mode page covers the branch mechanics.
Leaderboards are a legacy feature from the launch period. They are not the speedrun rankings; the community uses external timing. Do not expect an in-game ladder.
Console differences
The console versions are complete ports of the 2016 game. They do not include the 2026 anniversary update, which means no auto-aim toggle, no Super Dash and no Speed-runner branch. They do include the base game, the story and the achievements or trophies.
The other practical difference is price. Console copies are usually more expensive than the Steam version, especially during a 90% sale, and physical copies are a collector's market rather than a budget option.
If you already own a console version and are wondering whether to double-dip, the question is whether the update's quality-of-life changes are worth the price of a second copy. For most people, at $1.99, the answer is yes; the buying guide weighs it in more detail.
Performance and display
Owlboy renders at a fixed pixel resolution and scales to your display. On a 1080p monitor it is crisp; on a 4K screen the pixels are large but clean, because the art is pixel art and the scaling is integer-friendly.
The game runs at 60 frames per second on modest hardware. There are no graphics settings to speak of, which is normal for a 2D game of this vintage; the options menu is about controls and toggles rather than resolution.
On an ultrawide monitor the game letterboxes rather than stretching, which preserves the art. On a Steam Deck it fills the screen at the Deck's native aspect ratio.
