Owlboy anniversary update: the full changelog
The anniversary update shipped on 2026-11-01. It adds Auto-aim, Screenshake, Flash Effects and Drop Gunner On Dodge toggles, Super Dash, fast-forward for cutscenes, ZXC keyboard actions, boss and enemy rebalancing, and a Speed-runner Mode kept on a separate Steam branch.
The Owlboy anniversary update went live on 1 November 2026, ten years to the day after the game first released on Steam. It is a one-off update, not a live-service schedule: D-Pad Studio shipped it once, published the change list in the Steam post Owlboy | Anniversary Update Out Now!, and moved back to its other project. Everything below comes from that post.
The update has four blocks. Settings adds four toggles to the Options menu. Gameplay adds Super Dash, gunner drops, directional throwing, cutscene fast-forward and the ZXC key actions, and removes several cutscenes that used to take control away. Balancing changes boss patterns, enemy and boss HP, Alphonse's blast coverage, a handful of level layouts, fire damage, and stealth-section pirates. Speed-runner Mode is a separate build that intentionally keeps glitches runners use.
Settings: four new toggles
All four live in the Options menu and can be changed at any time, including mid-run.
| Toggle | What it changes | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-aim | The gunner locks onto the nearest target as you move; the second stick becomes optional | Keyboard players, single-stick pads, trackpads |
| Screenshake | Removes camera shake on hits and explosions | Motion-sensitive players |
| Flash Effects | Reduces full-screen flashes | Photosensitivity, late-night play |
| Drop Gunner On Dodge | Teleports the carried gunner away during a dodge | Tight platforming and boss dodging |
The auto-aim toggle is the headline. Before the update the game expected two thumbsticks or a mouse, which is why reviews kept mentioning awkward aiming. With auto-aim on, pressing shoot while carrying nobody teleports the selected gunner into Otus's hands and fires at the nearest target.
Gameplay: five additions and one removal
| Change | How it works in practice |
|---|---|
| Super Dash | Hold the roll button instead of tapping it; Otus keeps accelerating in the direction he faces and leaves a smoke puff |
| Gunner drop stun | Dropping Geddy or Alphonse onto an enemy's head stuns several enemy types |
| Directional throw | Pickups fly in the direction Otus is moving when you press throw |
| Cutscene fast-forward | Hold F on keyboard or the right bumper on a pad |
| ZXC actions | Z throws and interacts, X shoots, C spins |
| Removed halts | Several door-opening and transition cutscenes no longer stop play |
The removed cutscenes matter more than they sound. Doors that used to lock control for two or three seconds now open immediately, so routes in Vellie Cave or the Owl Temple flow without the stop-start rhythm of the 2016 build.
Balancing: what actually changed
The patch notes are deliberately non-numeric: D-Pad says "several bosses" had attack patterns modified and that boss and enemy HP were rebalanced, without publishing a table. What is confirmed:
| Area | Confirmed change |
|---|---|
| Boss patterns | Several bosses had attack patterns modified |
| HP | Bosses and regular enemies were rebalanced |
| Alphonse | His blast now affects more bosses and enemies, including Spikeballs and choppers |
| Layouts | Several environment layouts were altered to be easier to navigate |
| Fire | Fire damage no longer drains Otus's health bar over time |
| Stealth | Pirates can be permanently stunned in several ways during stealth sections |
Two of those change how you play rather than how hard the game is. Fire no longer ticking your health means the molten half of the Floating Continent is a positioning problem instead of a damage race. Permanent stealth stuns mean the pirate sections can be solved instead of endured.
Speed-runner Mode
The anniversary update also ships a second version of the game that keeps glitches used by the speedrunning community. It is opt-in, either through a Steam beta branch called speedrunner or through a value in the settings file inside Save Files/Owlboy. The full procedure, the techniques it preserves and the current record times are on the Speed-runner Mode page.
What the update does not include
There is no new level, no new boss, no co-op mode and no sequel hook. The co-op mode mentioned in the announcement is the experimental build shown once on the anniversary stream, not something you can install. The update is free and applies to the existing Steam version; there is no separate purchase.
If you want the player-facing read instead of the raw list, the what changed page walks through Super Dash timing, auto-aim behaviour and the ZXC layout in the order you meet them. The four toggles are broken down one by one on the accessibility settings page.
Confirming the anniversary build
Steam updates quietly. If you are not sure whether the patch installed, open the game and check two things: the Options menu should list Auto-aim, Screenshake, Flash Effects and Drop Gunner On Dodge, and holding the roll button should produce a sustained dash rather than a single dodge. If neither is true, the build is old. Verify the files through Steam, then launch again.
The build string is not shown in the main menu, so the menu is the practical check. Players who use the speedrunner branch will see the same Options menu but keep the older movement glitches; that branch is documented on the Speed-runner Mode page.
What it means for 2026
The update does not change the route, the story or the achievement list. A player starting in 2026 gets the same Vellie opening, the same five bosses and the same 12 achievements, with three differences that matter:
- The first hour is faster, because the door cutscenes are gone.
- Keyboard-only play is viable, so a laptop without a controller is enough.
- Fire damage no longer drains health, which lowers the difficulty of the molten section.
If you are choosing between the original 2016 build and this one, there is no reason to choose the original unless you specifically want the old movement for running. The buying guide covers the price side.
