How long Owlboy takes
HowLongToBeat's averages are 8h 24m for the main story, 10h 12m for main plus sides and 13h 22m for completionist runs, based on 416, 248 and 119 logged playthroughs.
Owlboy is a short game, and it is honest about it. HowLongToBeat's aggregate puts the main story at 8 hours 24 minutes, main plus extras at 10 hours 12 minutes, and a completionist run at 13 hours 22 minutes. Those numbers come from hundreds of logged playthroughs, not from the developer's estimate.
This page breaks down what those numbers mean, what inflates them, and how the length compares to the price.
The three averages
| Playstyle | Average | Median | Rushed | Leisure | Polled |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Main story | 8h 24m | 8h | 6h 36m | 12h 51m | 416 |
| Main + sides | 10h 12m | 10h | 7h 33m | 20h 3m | 248 |
| Completionist | 13h 22m | 13h | 10h 35m | 18h 25m | 119 |
| All playstyles | 9h 43m | 9h | 7h 10m | 19h 40m | 783 |
The gap between main story and completionist is about five hours. That is the optional layer: coins, disks, the cannon minigame and the two Geddy achievements. It is not a second campaign.
By platform
| Platform | Polled | Main | Main + sides | 100% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PC | 531 | 8h 34m | 10h 13m | 13h 47m |
| Nintendo Switch | 205 | 8h 5m | 10h 11m | 12h 52m |
| PlayStation 4 | 35 | 7h 43m | 9h 31m | 11h 46m |
| Xbox One | 6 | 8h 18m | 8h 51m | 12h |
The platform differences are small and mostly reflect who logs what. The PC sample is the largest and the closest to the overall average.
What makes a run longer
Four things, in order of impact:
- Coin collection. The confirmed dungeon banks are 1,400 coins, and the shop thresholds run to 2,000. Flying through every ring and opening every red chest adds a couple of hours.
- The Golden Disks. Three disks in three areas, plus two placement steps in Strato. The Owl Temple disk is behind a hidden wall.
- Dialogue and the bonfire. The bonfire conversations change across the game, and the school scenes in Advent are easy to skip. Reading them adds maybe an hour.
- Death and retries. The molten section and Solus are the two difficulty spikes. A first-time player can lose an hour there.
The anniversary update shortens runs slightly: door cutscenes are gone, the Super Dash makes traversal faster, and fire no longer drains health. It does not change the amount of content.
What makes a run shorter
If you ignore the optional layer and fast-forward dialogue, the main story is closer to seven hours. The game's structure is linear, there is no padding, and the dungeons are shorter than they look. A second playthrough with the route known is about five to six hours.
Speedrunners finish in under thirty minutes, which is a different activity entirely. The Speed-runner Mode page covers that.
Length versus price
At the current $1.99 discount, eight hours of main story works out to about 25 cents per hour. At the $19.99 list price it is about $2.38 per hour, which is normal for a premium indie game and high for a six-year-old platformer.
The price page has the full discount history. The short version: at two dollars, the length is not a concern; at twenty, it is a fair but not generous amount of game.
Is it too short?
That depends on what you want. Owlboy is a story-first game with a fixed campaign, no procedural content and no live service. It ends when the story ends. If you measure value in hours per dollar, the discount makes it an easy yes. If you want a hundred-hour metroidvania, this is not that game, and the comparison page explains the difference.
How the number is measured
HowLongToBeat is a self-reported database. Players log a completion and a time; the site averages them and publishes a median, a rushed percentile and a leisure percentile. That means the numbers reflect people who finish games and bother to log them, which skews slightly toward engaged players.
The sample sizes matter. The main-story figure is based on 416 submissions, which is large enough to be stable. The Xbox One figure is based on six, which is not; treat it as an anecdote.
The site's definition is loose: "main story" means the critical path, "main plus sides" means some optional content, and "completionist" means everything the player considered content. For Owlboy, the difference between the last two is mostly coins and disks.
What a second run looks like
A second playthrough is much faster than the first, for three reasons: you know the route, the puzzles are solved, and the anniversary update removed several cutscenes. Most returning players report five to six hours, which is close to the "rushed" percentile for a first run.
That is also the run where the optional layer is easiest to finish, because you are not stopping to read every dialogue box. If you are chasing 100%, the second run is the efficient one.
How it compares
Owlboy is shorter than the genre's biggest names. Hollow Knight is a thirty-hour game; Ori and the Blind Forest is about eight to ten; Super Metroid is around seven. Owlboy sits at the shorter end, closer to a compact story game than to a metroidvania built for exploration.
That is a design choice, not a shortfall. The game has no padding, no collectible bloat and no backtracking for its own sake. The comparison page goes through the differences without ranking them.
